Ty Beanie Baby : Ty Beanie Babies – Cheeks the Baboon – Retired Description
Ty Beanie Babies – Cheeks the Baboon – RetiredYou’ll go ape for Cheeks. He was born on May 18, 1999. His poem reads:
Don’t confuse me with an ape
I have a most unusual shape
My cheeks are round and tie-dyed red
On my behind as well as my head.
Cheeks was crafted with amazing attention to detail. His fur is a mottled brown and black. His four hands are brown as well as his ears and pronounced brow. The nose is pink and very lifelike, but as his name implies, his cheeks are what set him apart: his muzzle is bright red with sky blue and black stripes on either side. His bottom is also made of colorful tie-dyed fabric surrounding his sweet little tail. Surface wash only. –Peggy Etra Read More …

Disclaimer: I am not a Beanie Baby nut. I’m just as perplexed by the hysteria surrounding these little sacks of plastic pellets as the next guy, assuming the next guy isn’t one of those people who has funneled the last three years of his/her lunch money into amassing an overflowing throng of the colorful critters. Like my mother. So while the tendency of other seemingly normal members of society to hoard the various Ty species into a closet-clogging polyester zoo escapes me, the appeal of Cheeks the Baboon is obvious and universal: he’s funny lookin’! Anyone who has ever seen baboons on Wild Kingdom or Animal Planet can probably conclude how Cheeks got his name without even seeing him, but should the pun escape you, the folks at Ty are kind enough to spell it out for you in the poem on his heart tag: "Don’t confuse me with an ape, I have a most unusual shape, My cheeks are round and ty-dyed red, On my behind as well as my head!" Yes, it’s a butt joke – and a pretty good one at that. What so impresses me about Cheeks – and to be fair, about some of the other Beanie Babies as well (Schweetheart being a prime example) – is how nicely designed and well made he seems to be. The colors and patterns of the fabrics combine for a remarkable baboon resemblance. He is perfectly shaped and sculpted, with his eyes set back beneath a ridged brow that lends a surprising amount of expression to his face. And his posture is almost eerily baboon-like, with straight, slightly stiff back and a head that bulges a bit in back. And then, of course, there’s his colored butt cheeks. Someone at Ty was clearly on the ball when they designed this little guy! So while the amount of dignity in having one’s name inspired by the appearance of one’s butt is questionable, Cheeks appears not to mind. In fact, he seems almost proud. Amid the scores and scores of his Beanie brethren, Cheeks likely possesses the singular distinction of being the one Baby whose name you’ll always be able to recall from memory. What more could a baboon ask for?

The friend that I had this item sent to loved it. She had always wanted a “stuffed” baboon and this worked perfectly. It arrived on time, was well packaged and made a good friend very happy.
